The call for participation in the regulatory sandbox for the development of AI systems has closed

National AI Centre of Latvia has closed the call for projects for participation in the special regulatory environment, or sandbox, established for the safe, responsible, and practice-based development and testing of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in a controlled environment.

Within the framework of the call, 10 applications were received, covering various fields and AI application areas. This demonstrates strong interest in the opportunity to develop and improve artificial intelligence solutions within a clear regulatory framework and with the involvement of competent authorities.

Currently, in accordance with the applicable regulation, initial opinions on the submitted projects are being requested from the institutions involved in the call. Once all the necessary opinions have been received, the project evaluation process will begin. During this process, applications will be assessed based on their innovation potential, technical readiness, contribution to digital transformation goals, and justification for the need to use the regulatory sandbox.

The special regulatory environment is one of the central instruments, enabling project implementers to test new or significantly improved AI solutions in a safe and supervised environment, while identifying compliance, safety, and ethical issues at an early stage.

Information on the selected projects and next steps will be provided after the evaluation process has been completed.
